About Artwork:
The timeless art of Kerala Mural finds it origin at ancient temple’s sanctum sanctorum and palaces walls, as old as 8th century. Stylized facial expression and gestures trace their origin to the theatrical elements in the performing arts of Koodiyattam and Kathakali. Wide-open, round eyes, elongated painted lips, exaggerated eyebrows, dramatic body postures, and over-ornamentation are typical of the mural paintings. The correct and realistic representation of Gods and Goddesses is based on the Dhyana-shlokas that describes in precise form the physiognomy, facial and bodily expressions that helps artists to visualize the true picture of the deity. The compositions require strict adherence to the precise proportion, pose and background. For instance, the face is to be divided into three sections, the neck is to be one-fourth of the face, the length of the chest is to be equal to that of the face and so on. The panchavarna style of Kerala Mural are done in five colours -ochre-yellow, ochre-red, white, black and green, yellow, red, green, black, and blue, each with its significance in portrayal of figures. The colours chosen for various characters like Shiva, Vishnu, Ram etc. are on the basis of their characteristic features like green for ‘Sattvic’ or balanced, red for ‘Rajasic’ or powerful and white for ‘tamasic’ or inert. Colors were pigments derived from various stones, leaves and dyestuffs. The walls itself underwent an elaborate preparatory process ensuring long life of the paintings, usually made on the walls of a temple’s sanctum sanctorum and palaces. This painting of Radha Krishna is authentic form of Kerala Mural painted by most talented artist Suresh Muthukulam.
