Artform:
The artform of marking jewellery and utilitarian objects in Khambhat has persisted for thousands of years. Gulf of Khambhat, once a thriving port, known to be Cairo of India, with its rich architecture of lavish villas, Mecca gate – the passage for Indians to take Haj, today is a deserted coastline after years of siltation deposited by rivers. But all is not lost, the artisans have retained its 5000 years old tradition, as evidenced from excavations of Mohanjodaro with carnelian beads made similar to they way its is done even today. The entire process of making of beads, bowls and new lifestyle products is hand made using traditional tools and fixtures and know how is passed by generation to generation. Healing objects made of crystals, luxurious flooring and furnishing objects are of great global demand from this region.
